Badudel days
I had my baduy days when I was younger. I was in Grade 5 when I got infatuated to Randy Santiago. He was a funny guy with a good voice and made Lunch Date fun to watch. And of course, the shades made me more excited. I had 2 scrap books filled with his pictures that I cut from magazines and newspapers. During weekends, I was hogging the radio waiting for ‘Hindi magbabago’ to play. I kept on switching channels just to hear the song. (My mom didn’t buy the cassette tape even if I repeatedly requested for it.). In college, I found a friend who ‘lurve’ Randy Santiago also. We became good friends, and every Saturday I would attempt to go to Broadway with her just to watch him. But I wasn’t able to go with her because I was stuck with our typing class.
In high school, I had a huge crush on Robin Padilla. When his movie ‘Maging sino ka man’ came out, my friends decided to cut class just to watch the first day of showing at SM City. We were there at 10am, queuing just to get the valuable tickets. I’ve never seen droves of people at the cinema and it freaked me out. But I didn’t let the feeling get into me, I had to see Robin Padilla. As we were going out of the cinema, there were cameras around interviewing people about the movie. I was so scared that I might get caught on TV because my mom had no idea that I had cut class. The throngs of people grabbing the microphone for validation made it more difficult to go out. And at one point, a guy shouted ‘si Robin Padilla’, and hell broke loose. Women started screaming, calling out Robin’s name and I thought there’s going to be stampede as people rushed out to see him. That was the first and last Robin movie I saw.

What's in a name?
It's really irritating how people mispronounce my name. It's a simple 5 letter name. It's not even a Russian or French name that you have to twist your tongue to say it. I've been called Angus, Angnes, Angie, Acknes, Ahnes, Agens. I am irate but could not bring myself to correct these people. Probably I'm just flabbergasted to do anything.

Marines on the brink
We were all glued to the TV as the marines went on the brink of a bloody clash with each other. A certain Col. Querubin called for civil society support as he refused to recognize his new commandant. It turned out, as news would put it, that the previous commandant volunteered to be relieved. They said Philippine marines is one of the most disciplined and professional units in the armed forces and would obey nothing but their commandant; thus, they would have gone Querubin's way of disobedience. But, to the disappointment of the putschists and putschists' sympathizers, the standoff was resolved peacefully, with the marines returning to their barracks around midnight. I think the day was saved by Vice Admiral Mayuga who let the chain of command work itself out, refusing to "micromanage," and letting the new commandant, Gen. Allaga handle Querubin.
What was notable in all the tumult was how the top echelon of the armed forces and the police is dominated by Ilocanos: Chief of Staff Gen. Senga, Chief of Police Gen. Lomibao, National Capital Region's chief Gen. Querol. Although I don't see evil in the eyes of these generals, I was reminded of the Ilocano axis of power in MAlacañang back in Martial Law days---Marcos-Ver-Ramos-Enrile.
The morning after, national TV was awash with theories and sentiments about the standoff. On channel 23, Atom Araullo, a budding activitist, was having a discussion with yet another student leader from San Beda. The student was emphatic: "The armed forces was already with us. It was a disappointment that nothing happened." What was he rooting for to happen? Bloodshed? Military takeover? Junta leadership? An alliance between the leftist and the rightist forces, and the opposition camp (the Estrada clowns) is the least the country needs now. It happened in EDSA II and look where we are now, the spoils still being contested among these clashing forces, to the detriment of the Filipino people.
